About the Calendar

The Fashion Calendar is the premier event resource for fashion, beauty, media, and culture.

The Fashion Calendar is a subscription service founded in 1945 by publisher Ruth Finley. Originally a bi-weekly publication, the Calendar serves as the foremost scheduling and planning tool for fashion designers, press, retailers, public relation firms, and all remaining teams connected to the fashion industry.

On October 1, 2014 the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) acquired the Fashion Calendar, entering a new era with modernized features to streamline events planning and show scheduling. Customizable filters, seamless account navigation, robust scheduling tools, invaluable archival information, and networking capabilities propels Fashion Calendar forward as a uniting leader in the industry.

Ruth Finley

The CFDA remembers the monumental contributions Ruth Finley made to the American fashion industry with the creation of the Fashion Calendar.

Born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, Finley moved to New York after graduating from Simmons College in Boston in 1941. Her interest in fashion developed when she landed a position at Lord & Taylor in the visual department, and later went on to write for the New York Herald Tribune.

While at tea with two family friends – both fashion editors – she listened as they discussed a conflict between a show at Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman scheduled for the same date and time. An idea was born. With her keen eye, ambitious spirit, and generous loan of $1,000 from a college friend, Finley launched Fashion Calendar in 1945, a resource that would revolutionize the industry.

Owned and organized by the cfda

Since 2014, the Fashion Calendar and the Official New York Fashion Week Schedule have been owned and organized by the CFDA.

Why Pink?

The Fashion Calendar began as a bi-weekly printed publication mailed to its readers. Within every issue were the iconic pink pages of the Fashion Calendar.  CFDA acquired Fashion Calendar in 2014, founded and formerly run by Ruth Finley, publisher and expert planner of New York fashion events, for more than 65 years. The landscape of New York Fashion Week and the fashion industry itself is constantly evolving. Amid this evolution, CFDA ushers the Fashion Calendar into its digital reintroduction while honoring the vibrant history of this leading resource with a splash of pink.

The Fashion Institute of Technology has launched its Fashion Calendar Research Database (FCRD), a new digital humanities project and open-source research database.

Every issue of the Fashion Calendar and its iconic pink pages were donated to FIT, and now the collection — more than 3,000 issues and upwards of 30,000 pages of material — have been fully scanned and digitized, are searchable and downloadable for anyone, for free, from wherever they are.

The FCRD integrates innovative design and the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning technologies to enhance the text-based archive with digital tools that promote search optimization, data visualization, graph and mapping capabilities. The research tool helps reveal the true diversity of the American fashion and creative communities during the twentieth-and-early-twenty-first centuries.
